Superintendent S. Dallas Dance will meet for the first time this school year with the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council and the inaugural Superintendent’s Parent Advisory Council.
Both groups are charged with providing advice and feedback to Dr. Dance on school system initiatives as well as sharing views and concerns and discussing ideas, goals and challenges within the system. Members of both councils, who will serve for a year, will meet quarterly with Dr. Dance and his leadership team.
“Our students and their parents and guardians are key stakeholders in our school system, and their perspectives are important to consider," Dr. Dance said. “Hearing many voices with many viewpoints – all with the shared goal of
advancing student academic achievement – is necessary to making the right decisions and moving our school system forward."
The 17-member Student Advisory Council is composed of high school students selected to represent each of the county’s five geographical areas, along with the student member of the Board of Education and the president of the Baltimore County Student Council. Members also were evaluated on a variety of other factors, including grade levels and areas of interest.
While superintendent’s student advisory groups had been appointed in the past, Dance said he sought to open the selection process to capture a wider range of students and perspectives. Members of the superintendent’s Student Advisory Council for 2013-14 are:
